Curatorial Note —

I can’t help but curate crazy things with beautiful people from the underground — so without further ado, here is PLANET TECHNO! RAIDFEST on Twitch, featuring DJs from across the globe, all droppin’ all manner of fine forms of techno musik! To listen, check your time/zone, and then pop onto Twitch and visit the streamer’s page using the Twitch handles in the flyer — once you are listening, when they are done they will RAID the next DJ and you will be taken along for the ride…. One of the cool things about Twitch is the community takin’ place in the Chat, with emotes & other shennanigans, it is like Old Internet, IRC style, plus a microcurrency system (Bits, Tips, Subs) to support the DJs. Unlike social media it is very direct, and the DJs below all bring you into their studios/living rooms, a much more intimate experience online that is at times quite rewarding—which is to say, combining strange culture with cosmic sounds! See you on the spinz — tobias.dj

Riddims & Routes

Recorded for // Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music Culture // Echoes from the Dub Diaspora // Special Issue 7.2 dancecult.net

The sonic archives of the dub diaspora are as vast and unfathomable as the depths of the black Atlantic from whence they came. Thousands upon thousands of hours of audiowaves converse with a multitude of genres. This mix traverses but two routes: Jamaica to Berlin by way of Detroit, in the ecstatic decade of the 1990s; and through London’s expatriate burroughs, in the dreadnought ‘00s.

ION STORM 012: live @ TAXI radio | Hoedown

ION STORM 012 presents two tobias.DJ mixtapes from the archives…

The first 45 minutes is live on TAXI Radio, 96.1FM in Vancouver on November 18th, 1998, sometime past midnight, on DJ Leanne’s show Housecall, hosted by Melanie Dawn. Deep techno here from labels such as Cosmic Records, Blue Recordings, Svek, Jericho, with records from Swayzak, Altitude, Steve Bicknell, Cari Lekebusch, Jasper Dahlback and Adam Beyer… yah it’s live, with skipping records & snafus. Keepin’ it honest. Included in the radio patter is an interview with DJ “Skinny” Graham — I wonder what ever happened to him?

The second 45 minutes is excerpted from a two and a half hour set at HOEDOWN, a Crazy Dave joint thrown in the farmlands of North Delta, BC, a kind of early morning, dew-soaked affair of midwest-style acieed freakery — I arrived and threw down an abstract & minimalist set of Detroit techno. As far as I can remember Hoedown was summer 1998. I think.

ION STORM 011: plastikconcept (1999)

ION STORM (011): PLASTIKONCEPT | tobias.dj | 31st August 1999

ION_STORM_011

This three-deck mix recorded August 31st, 1999, the year of the millennial countdown, 666-1, with no prepared records, just a crate of Plastikman wax indicative of an era: dark warehouses, massive soundsystems, and echoes under the stars. Featuring Plastikman / Richie Hawtin’s albums from Sheet One to Consumed, side projects as F.U.S.E. and Cybersonik, the Concept ’96 series, and unnamed releases including Plus8068.

Richie Hawtin, the erstwhile British-Canadian from London, Ontario, was a revered influence on the small techno collectives out West in Vancouver, BC [ notably shrumtribe.com ]. We maintained contact through the techno.ca mailing list & through drops from Plus8’s webmaster Tosh, who gratefully provided advanced promo direct from Richie.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Hawtin at the time for Discorder magazine, discussing his then first-step into digital DJing with Final Scratch (which at the time ran only on BeOs). A futurist to the core, Richie has since proven himself one of few sole survivors in what transformed from an esoteric, acidic ‘ardcore element of rave & Detroit techno culture to the Berlin & Ibiza “techno industry”.

Liquid Fire (2012)

LIVESTREAM HERE | YOUTUBE HD HERE

Round two showdown at the DMT Lab, flipping through some new tracks that touch on the bangin’ interface between dub & Detroit techno (with an acid taste on the tongue, of course). Thanks to DJ Test Pilot for filming the mix & providing the requisite shots of liquid fire, VJ Matsui808 for tripping me out (and upping the ante with the dark magus decahedron), and J. for stitching the whole ensemble together (a time consuming and thankless task). During this mix I blew a screw out of the crossfader, experimented with some Traktor Beatmasher & Delay efx, and switched over to a few slabs of actual vinyl at the end… as always, nothing prepared, and of course no auto sync.

This mix gathers a few strains of my becomings as a DJ, namely minimalist strains of deep house and dub techno dating back to the mid’90s. Though my mixtapes from the late ’90s were hard as nails, I began by djing deep house @ Sugar Refinery (RIP), with Robby Luv Dub as my adopted mentor. I often mixed deep house with dub techno at the post-rave Sunday sessions and loft parties of the era. This mix touches upon a few of those records, though keeping this side of the techno aesthetic (a retro deep house mix is still to come). Still vinyl, still unprepared.

The second existential journey into ø, the state of nothingness, barred & slashed, desire denied, but throughout, with strange & redeeming forays into minimalist house, taking cues from Detroit’s unswerving faith in the redemption of techno. With vinyl from Hardwax. No prepared records.
